There are many engaging stories about Sun Ra, jazz musician, band leader of his band Arkestra, poet, and above all a one-of-a-kind personality. My favorite was told by Robin Eubanks:
Sun Ra was on the phone trying to make arrangements to take the band to Canada, and Robin overheard his part of the conversation.
"Yes, I understand that those are the regulations for earthlings," he said to the official, "but what are the rules for the omnipotent?"
Robin couldn't hear the reply, but it was obviously more bureaucratic requirements. Finally Sun Ra said, "This is the worst planet I've ever been on!" and hung up the phone. I know just how he felt.
There’s a zany BBC documentary on Sun Ra that you might enjoy.
I liked Su Ra's Arkestra and music, but loved his presence onstage. What a trip!
Didn't know anything about jazz when I encountered my first Sun Ra album. (Musta been 1969-70.) Here it was, all in one package: music, outrage, effrontery, sci-fi buffoonery. Nothing not to like.
